May - July 2002

July 27th
Southall visited the White Lion Ground of Edgware Town to play their first pre-season friendly. 
The Southall side included several players from last season together with potential signings and created numerous chances against their Ryman Division Two opposition but which were needlessly squandered.
A late goal by the home team proved to be the only goal of the game.
Andre Robinson, who played for Southall over the past two seasons, is currently on trial at Crystal Palace.

July 22nd

The Match Secretary has reported that about thirty people attended the trial matches held on July 18th. The people who attended were a mixture of first team players from last season together with those aspiring to play for Southall during the coming season.

July 21st
Southall Reserves face a tough away trip to Western Command in the First Round of the Middlesex Federation Football League Cup. The winners of this tie will entertain either Steadfast United Reserves or Haze FC in Round Two.
This competition was formerly known as the Middlesex County League Open Cup and has been sponsored jointly by the Federation of Middlesex Sports and www.capitalcounty.com 

July 20th
The First Team fixture list is now on the web site. 

July 18th
There will be trial matches on Saturday July 20th for any players who are of proven Combined Counties standard or who consider themselves able to play at that level of football.
The trial matches  will begin at 2 pm at Osterley Sports Club, Tentelow Lane, Norwood Green, Southall.

July 16th
Three pre-season friendlies have been announced:
Saturday July 27th Edgware Town Away 3pm
Wednesday August 7th Hillingdon Borough Away 6.45 pm
Saturday August 10th Brook House Away 3 pm
The fixtures for the Combined Counties League have also been received. 
Southall begin the season on August 17th with  a visit to Raynes Park Vale. 
Three days later on Tuesday August 20th AFC Wallingford are the visitors to Mill Meadow. 
On Saturday August 24th Southall entertain Chipstead and on Bank Holiday Monday they make the trip to local rivals Bedfont. 
Saturday August 31st sees Southall in F.A. Cup action at Stowmarket and providing that a replay is not needed AFC Wimbledon make the trip to Mill Meadow on Tuesday September 3rd.
The full fixture list will be posted on the web site this coming weekend.

July 2nd
The web master has been advised that the Combined Counties League fixtures for the forthcoming season will be released at sometime around July 22nd.

June 29th
The draws for the 2002-2003 F.A. Cup and the F.A Vase have been made.
Southall come into the F.A. Cup in the Preliminary Round and have to travel to face Jewson Eastern Counties Premier League side Stowmarket Town. Last season Stowmarket finished in sixth position. The tie will take place on Saturday August 31st.
If Southall win the tie then they will entertain either Northampton Spencer or Yaxley. Both teams play in the Premier Division of the United Counties League. Last season Northampton Spencer finished 17th while Yaxley finished 11th.
The tie is scheduled for Saturday September 14th.
Southall enter the F.A. Vase in the Second Qualifying Round when they entertain old rivals Flackwell Heath who are now members of the newly formed Division Two of the Ryman League. Last season Flackwell Heath finished 20th just two points above bottom team Camberley Town.
The match is due to take place on Saturday September 21st.

June 24th
Southall will face newly formed AFC Wimbledon in the Combined Counties League next season.
At the Annual General Meeting held in Old Woking three new clubs were elected to the competition with bottom of the table Cranleigh being relegated to the Surrey Senior League.
The clubs elected are Frimley Green form the Surrey Senior League, North Greenford United from the Middlesex County League and AFC Wimbledon.
The league campaign begins on August 17th with fixtures to be announced as soon as possible after the Ryman League fixtures have been published. This is due to the fact that three member clubs ground share with Ryman League clubs.
The first two rounds of the Premier Division Challenge Cup were drawn. In the first round Southall have to visit  Reading Town. The victors of this encounter will travel to either Walton Casuals or AFC Wimbledon.
The representatives of AFC Wimbledon who were at the AGM estimated that the likely travelling support for the 'New Dons' would be about 400 spectators. This was seen as a welcome boost in income for the other member clubs.

June 14th
Southall have finished next to the bottom in the Combined Counties Premier Division Fair Play League.
Their record of 42 yellow cards and 12 dismissals totalling 78 points was better than only one club Chessington United who amassed 92 points made up of 59 yellow cards and 11 dismissals.
Although the disciplinary record is very poor it does mark an improvement on that of the previous season.
The Fair Play League was won by Westfield with 32 points who suffered 26 yellow cards and 2 dismissals. Ash United was the only team not to have a player sent off in Combined Counties matches although their reserve team had 7 players dismissed.

June 7th
The 1946-1947 season was concluded with a visit to Highbury to play Hendon in the Middlesex Charity Cup Final. 
Southall went into the game as strong favourites following a good season in the Athenian League where they finished only four points behind champions Barnet. During the league campaign they had also completed the double over Hendon , 4-1 at Western Road and 2-1 at Claremont Road. 
The match did not run to form and Hendon were crowned champions after thrashing  Southall 5-0.

June 6th
The football season extended into June in both 1942 and 1947. Edgware Town were the visitors to Western Road in 1942 to play Southall for the Southall Hospital Cup. The North London side returned home following a convincing 6-2 victory.
Five years later neighbours Hayes were the opponents at Western Road in a benefit match for Alec Chudley. Southall proved too strong for The Missioners and won the match 3-0.

May 21st

This is a review of the 2001-2002 season  as seen through the eyes of a long time supporter. It is essential reading for people who have been unable to attend matches this season.

May 17th
In 1971 Southall travelled the short distance to Church Road to play local rivals Hayes in the final of the Middlesex Charity Cup. The Missioners proved much too strong and won the game 4-0.

May 16th
Southall had a convincing 5-1 victory when they played Leyton in a Herts and Middlesex League fixture at Western Road in 1942.

May 15th
As part of the Festival of Britain in 1951 Southall were hosts to Innsbruck of Austria. The match played in front of 3000 spectators finished as a 2-2 draw. The Southall scorers were Ron Bailey and Ron Heckman.

May 14th
The web master has been advised of the following:
The Management Committee of the Combined Counties League at its meeting on May 13th has decided that the postponed match between Southall and Farnham Town should not be replayed and that the match should be awarded to Farnham Town. Southall Football Club has also been fined the maximum amount of £150.

There was also bad news for Southall on this day in 1932 when they faced Enfield in the Middlesex Charity Cup Final. In a match played at Lower Mead,  Enfield won by the only goal of the game.

May 13th
The 1949-1950 season was concluded with the visit of Yiewsley to Western Road for the Southall Hospital Cup. The only goal of the game from Ron Bumpstead meant that Southall retained the trophy for another year.

May 12th
For the first match to be held following VE Day in 1945 a Queens Park Rangers  XI visited Western Road to play for the Southall Hospital Cup. Honours were even with a 3-3 draw and so the trophy was shared.

May 11th
Southall and Hendon met at Church Road, Hayes in the Middlesex Charity Cup Final in 1957. Two goals from Alan Dyke were not enough to give Southall victory as Hendon won 4-2 after extra time.

May 10th
Southall shared a trophy on this day in 1924. The final of the Middlesex Charity Cup against Botwell Mission  in front of 5087 spectators at Griffin Park, Brentford ended in a 0-0 draw after extra time. Botwell Mission are now better known as Hayes.

May 9th
Enfield Town of the Essex Senior League who were 1-0 victors over Southall in the Quarter Final of the Middlesex Charity Cup have won that competition.
The final which was played at the ground of Brook House ended as 1-1 after extra time. Enfield Town won the penalty shoot out 4-3.
Southall won a trophy on this day in 1953 when they beat Royal Navy Air Command 3-1 to lift the Southall Hospital Cup. The Southall scorers that day were Eric Parker(2) and one from Morgan Reynolds.

May 8th
Southall faced Enfield in the final of the Middlesex Charity Cup 81 years ago today.
In the match played at Griffin Park, Brentford the winners were Enfield 2-1 after extra time.

May 7th
At the Management Committee Meeting of the Combined Counties League on Monday May 13th the matter of the postponed match against Farnham Town will be discussed. A decision will then be made as to the need for a new date for that fixture.
On this day in 1932 Southall took part in one of the highest aggregate matches in their history. On a visit to Underhill to play Barnet in the Athenian League Southall lost the match 8-5.


May 6th

The Combined Counties League  match at home to Farnham Town was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. A new date for the match will be announced as soon as possible.
Southall played a benefit match for player W. Morris on this day in 1925. Their opponents on the day were Savoy who left Western Road with a 1-0 victory.


May 5th
Southall Football Club would like to send their sincere condolences to Frank Gill following the tragic death of his brother.

Southall won their way through to the final of the Middlesex Charity Cup fifty years ago with an emphatic 7-0 victory over Finchley.
In the match played at Western Road two goals each from Billy Wenlock, Ron Heckman and John Simpson and one from Johnny Way earned Southall a tie in the final against Wealdstone.

May 4th
Southall drew 3-3 at  Hertford Town on this day in 1940. Football continued throughout World War Two with Southall competing in the Herts and Middlesex League.

May 3rd
Fifty years ago Southall visited Leyton for an Athenian League match. Two goals from Johnny Way and one from Eric Parker gave Southall a 3-1 victory.

May 2nd

On this day in 1896 Southall faced Uxbridge in  the replay of the final of the Middlesex Senior Cup. Three weeks earlier the two sides had drawn 1-1 at Gunnersbury Lane, Ealing in front of 5000 spectators.
In the replay played at Hanwell, with a crowd of over 4000 in attendance, Southall were defeated 3-2.


May 1st
Please note that the Combined Counties League match at home to Farnham Town will kick off at 11.30 am and not 12 noon as was previously stated.
